Step by step

How to book a session with Sonya

Booking is straightforward. Most people go through the same five steps, and you can stop at any point if it doesn't feel right.

  1. 1. Get in touch

Call the clinic on 0191 580 1548, ring Sonya's mobile on 07896 204588, send an email or use the enquiry form. A line or two about what you'd like help with is plenty. Please don't include detailed medical information in emails or web forms.

  2. 2. A free phone consultation

Sonya will arrange a time to talk on the phone. The call is free, and there's no obligation to book anything afterwards.

  3. 3. Your first session

If you decide to go ahead, you'll agree a date for your first appointment at the clinic in Wallsend. Appointments are by arrangement, so there's no need to fit in with a fixed timetable.

  4. 4. Between sessions

You may be given something simple to practise at home, such as a breathing exercise, an EFT routine or a short relaxation. Any changes you notice, even small ones, are useful to talk about next time.

  5. 5. Review and decide

Sonya reviews your progress with you openly. You can then decide to continue, take a break or finish, whenever feels right for you.

What does the free phone consultation cover?

The free consultation is a relaxed phone conversation that helps you and Sonya decide whether sessions are right for you. You can describe what's been happening, ask any questions you have and hear how Sonya might work with you. It usually helps to have a rough idea of what you'd like to change, but you don't need to have it all worked out.

Sonya will also explain her fees, which approach might suit you and roughly how sessions would be structured. If it sounds as though another kind of support would serve you better, such as your GP or a specialist service, she will tell you honestly. There's no pressure either way, and you can take time to think before booking.

What happens at your first appointment

Your first session begins with a fuller conversation. Sonya will ask about your goals, your background and any relevant health information, including medication. This helps her plan sessions safely and shape them around you.

After that, you'll usually start an initial piece of work using an approach you've agreed together. With hypnotherapy, that often means a guided relaxation in which you stay aware of what is happening throughout. Our article on what happens in a first hypnotherapy session describes it in more detail, and common myths about hypnosis clears up a few popular misunderstandings.

What should I bring or wear?

Wear whatever you feel comfortable in, as most sessions take place sitting in a chair. Reiki is done fully clothed, lying on a couch. It can help to bring a list of any medication you take and a note of questions you'd like to ask.

How long do sessions last?

Most sessions last between 60 and 90 minutes. Counselling sessions are usually around 60 minutes. Stop smoking support is normally a single, longer session, with an optional follow-up if you'd like one.

How many sessions will I need?

There's no fixed number, because it depends on what you're working on and how you respond. A specific goal, such as feeling calmer before a driving test, may need only a few sessions. Broader concerns, like long-standing anxiety, may take longer. You're never tied into a set course, and Sonya will be honest with you if sessions don't seem to be helping.

Questions

Common questions before booking

Sonya Hudson in her hypnotherapy clinic in Wallsend, Newcastle upon Tyne

If you need urgent help: call 999 or go to A&E in an emergency. For urgent mental health support, call NHS 111 (option 2 in England) or contact your GP. Samaritans are available day and night on 116 123.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No, you can contact Sonya directly. If you have a health condition, it's still a good idea to let your GP know you're thinking about complementary support.

What if I don't know which therapy I want?

That's very common. Just describe what you'd like help with, and you can agree the approach together during your consultation. Our guide to choosing an approach may also help.

Will I be asleep during hypnosis?

No. Hypnosis feels like deep relaxation with focused attention, and most people stay aware of what is being said. You can open your eyes, speak or stop the session whenever you want.

Can I have sessions if I take medication?

Please mention any medication during your consultation, so Sonya can take it into account when planning sessions. Never stop or change prescribed medication without speaking to your doctor first.

Can I bring someone with me?

Sessions are usually one-to-one. If you'd like someone to come with you, please mention it during your consultation so it can be discussed.

Is this suitable for children?

Arrangements for young people under 18, including parental consent, are discussed during the initial conversation.

How do I know Sonya is properly qualified?

Sonya is registered with the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) and holds diplomas in hypnotherapy, NLP and counselling. You can see her full list of qualifications on the About page.

Ready for step one?
